Question 1 - Evaluation

HOW DOES THE PRODUCTION USE/CHALLENGE/DEVELOP FORMS & CONVENTIONS

Gender Characteristics: In this part of the productions the characters are deliberately acting like stereotypical men and women, the male character is reserved and keeps himself to himself whereas the female character is much more eccentric and plays with her jewellery and hair. This conforms to conventions of narrative music videos.

Close ups: during the production, in every other frame bar three or four there are close ups of the artist singing, this is the production company rights in order so audiences know who the artists is and so he or she is easily depict able. This conforms to music videos.

Genre Characteristics: Our genre is indie-pop with a hint of soul, as this genre is so alternative we had to make our artist in the video look the part, we placed him in a vintage chunky knit sweater and matching hat and carrying an acoustic guitar to make him look unique, artistic and fit the indie genre style. (ideas from ed sheeran helped). This conformed to music videos.

Demands of the record label: In this convention usually record label demand a certain amount of shots or specific shots that they want in the video this is either to promote or establish the artists further, one demand is usually a short frame of the artist actually performing this way audiences can know that the artist is actually talented and not made in a recording studio, in our shot we had our main actor playing the guitar and singing to this part in the track. This conforms to conventions of music videos.

Relationship between music and visuals: this is probably one of the most important in the conventions as the visuals have to fit what is going on on the track, in this part of the production the tempo increased with a strong drum beat, in this part of the video the actors footsteps gradually increased in speed to match the timings of the increased tempo of the song perfectly.

Relationship between lyrics and visuals: In this part of the song the artist sings the words "look at me" we decided that to created a deeper feel to the song we could almost make it look like the mother character was saying those words to her son who has become unconscious.

We challenged conventions at the end of the video by not making a resolution, or making the resolution clear, the boy became unconscious and then entered the hyper real world, then at the end the shot used to tell the audience he had passed out we used again to make audiences question whether it was all  dream or did it really happen, did he die? this makes the video and artists more rememberable as audiences speculate on the video.

We challenged conventions again by using a female actor as the father in the video, this was to add to the hyper real theme of the video, we directed the actor in to acting like a male using stereotypical traits but audiences can clearly see the actor is a female.
Relationship between lyrics and visuals: In the chorus of the song the artist sings "stand close, and come in to my space" in this part of the video the actors deliberately walks past another actor to oppose what is being sung and to do the opposite, this adds to the rebellious feel of the video and to not conform to society but to be individual.

Relationship between music and visuals: The tempo of the song heavily speeds up and a loud heavy drumbeat is used to add tot his, in this part of the video, the audience have just discovered the reality of the hyper real world and in fact the character is unconscious, we used around 40 camera angled all less than a second long to match the drum beat used, this added a dramatic feel to the video and heightened the drama in this point of the song.

INTRO TO EVALUATION

4 QUESTIONS

  1. HOW DOES THE PRODUCTION USE/CHALLENGE/DEVELOP FORMS & CONVENTIONS - 9 frame selection/analysis of your main examples of conventions - use Goodwin as a model but make sure you cover form & genre - video directors commentary with excerpts from videos as cutways/ green screen?
  2. COMBINATION OF ANCILLARY PRODUCTS - HOW EFFECTIVE? - directors commentary or prezi with voiceover with discussion with the video, digipack, website with examples embedded?
  3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM AUDIENCE FEEDBACK - prezi with embedded images and video files accompanied by a voiceover?
  4. NEW MEDIA IN YOUR R&P, PRODUCTION & EVALUATION - blog post or prezi with embedded videos and screen captures, logos, photos of you using the software?

Brand Identity

Brand Identity is possibly one of the most important aspects is the music industry as that is what will attract your target audiences and make those audiences fans of the artists work.

This is why Danny and Rosie had to think a long time about brand identity, we decided to create the music video first and come to the digi pack and website later on, when editing the final music video we decided to place black and white filters on the start and end of the video then a hyper real pink and orange colour grade on the scenes by the sea side, this worked well as it separated the reality and hyper reality aspects in our video.

When creating the digi pack we decided to keep the same theme of black and white and few parts in colour this meant one the digi pack was complete we placed a black and white filter over the whole thing and used an eraser to erase the filter on the specific parts that we wanted to stay in colour, meaning it fit with the music video really well.

This meant when creating the website we had to keep the same theme of black and white and few parts in colour, this makes the whole thing look very professional as it flows the same theme through all of our aspects of creating and image and brand identity for the artist.

As you can see the three images below show the flow of same colour scheme and brand identity throughout the website, digi-pack and music video.
